Search the Dictionary

1 Do one of the following:

To display the Dictionary Search page in your current browser window, in the menu bar, click References > Dictionary Search.

To display the Dictionary Search page in a separate window or tab, in the information bar, click Tools > Dictionary Search.

2 Click the appropriate tab: Order Code, Diagnosis, or Insurance.

3 If you clicked the Order Code tab, and you want the search results to include restricted or limited access codes and custom panels, in the Client list, click the appropriate client. (Your default client is selected automatically. You can change your default client via your user profile.)

Notes:

The Client field appears on the page no matter which tab you use, but you can specify a client only when you click the Order Code tab.

For some labs, a Proper Order of Draw link appears on this dialog box, providing access to important information about drawing and handling specimens.

4 In the Search Criteria area, do either of the following:

Search by text. To search for a specific code, word, or phrase, follow these steps:

a If you are searching for tests, select or clear the Code/Desc or Alias check box (or both).

If you select only the Code/Desc check box, the search results will be limited to codes whose order code or test name match the specified text. If you select the Alias check box, the search results will include aliases and handwritten order translations as well.

Clearing both check boxes is the same as selecting only the Code/Desc check box.

Note: If the lab does not support searching by aliases, only handwritten order translations are included in the search results.

b In the Search String box, type all or part of the order code or test name, ICD code or diagnosis name, or carrier name.

You can optionally include an asterisk (*) in the code or name. For example, to find only diagnosis codes that begin with C85 (such as C851, C8510, C8511, etc), you could type C85*. To find only diagnosis codes that end with 85 (such as A185, A1885, A3685 etc), you could type *85.

Notes:

If you clicked the Order Code tab and selected the Alias check box, do not include an asterisk in your search text. For aliases, the asterisk is treated like a character rather than a wildcard.

If you clicked the Insurance tab, you can type a complete or partial carrier name, but not a mnemonic.

c Click Search.

Search by initial letter. To display a list of all test names, diagnoses, or insurance carriers that begin with a specific letter, click the appropriate letter.

The bottom of the page displays all appropriate matches. If you searched for an order code or diagnosis code, exact matches appear first in the list.

For tests and diagnoses, the page displays the code and description. For insurance carriers, the page displays the mnemonic and full name of the carrier.

Note: For tests, only primary order codes appear in the Code column; alternate codes (if any) appear in brackets in front of the test name. For example, if a CBC is associated with the primary code 6399 and the alternate code 42A, and you search for 42A, the Code column would display 6399, and the Report Title column would include [42A].

5 Do any of the of the following:

Sort the tests. On the Order Code tab, click the Code, Report Title, or Handwritten Order Translation column heading. (The Handwritten Order Translation column appears only if the Alias check box is selected.)

Order codes are sorted first by length, then numerically. For example, when order codes are sorted in descending order, 8001 would appear above 15102, since 8001 is a four-digit code, and 15102 is a five-digit code.

You can click the column heading again to reverse the sort order.

Search for a specific item in the search results. Type any text in the box next to the Find Text button, and then click Find Text. The specified text (if found) is highlighted in the search results.

You can click Find Text multiple times to find each instance of the specified text.

View detailed test information. On the Order Code tab, click an order code to display details about the test or panel, such as the preferred specimen, minimum volume, transport container and temperature, and other information. For a panel, the order codes and test names of the components are also listed. In addition, if an alert message is associated with the order code, that message appears at the top. To return to the search results, click Back.

View a list of diagnoses with greater specificity. On the Diagnosis tab, click any underlined diagnosis code to display a list of the codes with higher specificity. (Only diagnosis codes that require higher specificity are underlined.) To display the complete search results again, click Search.

Print the search results. Click Print, make any appropriate changes on the Print dialog box, and then click Print.

Create an Excel spreadsheet of the search results:

Notes:

To view this information, you must have a supported version of the Microsoft Excel® Desktop App. (Excel Viewer and Excel for the web are not supported.)

This feature is not available on Citrix systems.

a Click Excel.

The spreadsheet opens in a separate Excel window.

For diagnoses and insurance carriers, the spreadsheet includes only the information displayed in the search results. For tests, it includes additional information, such as whether or not the order code is for a profile, the components of the profile (if appropriate), the appropriate specimen type, whether or not it is a Pap test, and the appropriate transport temperature.

b Use the appropriate procedure in Excel to perform any tasks, such as sorting the data or saving it to a local folder.

6 To perform another search, repeat steps 25.
