Specify Standing Order Details

1 In the Tests section, select the Standing Order check box.

Note: For hospital staff members, the Standing Order check box does not appear.

When you select the Standing Order check box, the standing order frequency options appear.

2 If this standing order is for Companion Diagnostics tests, select the Companion check box and click the appropriate program in the list. Otherwise, go to step 4.

This check box appears only if the client supports Companion Diagnostics. If no client appears in the Client box in the Order Information section, the check box appears only if your default client supports Companion Diagnostics. For information about specifying the client to use for this order, see Provide Order Information.

When you select this check box, you will be able to order only tests that are part of the selected program. (A Companion Program group with the supported tests appears automatically in the Tests section. For more information, see Specify a Test.)

3 If a REMS ID box appears, type the appropriate Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategies (REMS) ID.

You can change this ID later by editing the standing order, but the REMS ID cannot be changed when an instance of this standing order is filed. (The REMS ID will appear on the requisition, in the requisition log, and on the Standing Order Management page.)

4 If the Requested Draw Time list appears, click the time of day when the specimen should be collected.

Note: This list appears only if the client that appears in the Client box in the Order Information section is a long-term care (LTC) client.

5 To specify how frequently the specimen should be collected, do one of the following:

To collect the specimen this often

6 Click in the Start box and then click the date when the standing order should begin, or type the date.

Tip: You can use any of the following shortcuts to specify the date:

Type y for yesterday’s date.

Type t-# (where # is the number of days prior to today). For example, type t‑5 to specify the date five days prior to today’s date.

Type t+# (where # is the number of days after today). For example, type t+14 to specify the date two weeks from today.

Note: The start date cannot be more than 365 days from the current date (or whatever number of days is specified in the system for retaining pending orders).

7 Click in the End box and then click the date when the standing order should end, or type the date.

The end date must be after the start date.

Tip: You can type t+# (where # is the number of days after today). For example, type t+14 to specify two weeks from today.

Note: The allowed date range for standing orders is determined by an administrator. Currently, the end date for non‑Companion Diagnostics tests cannot be more than 186 days from the start date. For Companion Diagnostics tests, the end date cannot be more than the maximum time frame defined for the specified program (such as five years).

8 If the Station-Room field appears, type the patient’s station in the first box and room number in the second box (if the correct information did not appear automatically).

9 In the Comments box, type any comments related to this standing order.

These comments will appear in the requisition log.

10 If the patient would like to receive a reminder prior to each specimen collection date, select the Send Reminder check box and go to step 11. Otherwise, go to step 12.

Notes:

If the standing order frequency is set to Daily, the Send Reminder check box is automatically cleared and inactive. You can send reminders only if the standing order frequency is set to Weekly or Monthly.

If you subsequently order a test from a lab that does not support this feature, the Send Reminder check box becomes cleared and inactive.

The reminders are sent three days in advance of a weekly specimen collection date, and seven days in advance of a monthly collection date.

The patient will not receive a reminder if the first collection date is fewer than seven days away. For example, if you create a standing order on Wednesday, and the first collection date is the following Monday, the patient will not receive a reminder for that appointment. However, a reminder will be sent for any appointments after the following Wednesday.

For LTC clients, sending standing order reminders is not recommended.

11 Do one of the following:

To have the reminder sent via email, in the Reminder Method list, click Email.

If the patient’s email address exists in eLabs, it appears automatically in the Email box. If no email address appears, or if it is incorrect, type the patient’s email address.

To have the reminder sent via a text message, in the Reminder Method list, click Text Message.

If the patient’s mobile telephone number exists in eLabs, it appears automatically in the Mobile Phone box. If no phone number appears, or if it is incorrect, type the patient’s mobile phone number.

Be sure to advise the patient that any text messaging charges apply.

To have the patient called by telephone, in the Reminder Method list, click Phone Call. In the Phone area, click the appropriate option (Home, Work, or Mobile).

If the specified type of phone number exists for the patient in eLabs, it appears automatically in the adjacent box. If no phone number appears, or if it is incorrect, type the appropriate phone number.

Note: Any email address or phone number that you provided will be automatically saved with the patient’s record as soon as you complete the order, even if you clear the Send Reminder check box.

12 Specify the tests to include in the standing order (as described in Specify a Test).
