Provide AOE Data

1 Click the AOE tab.

2 Provide the appropriate information (if it does not appear automatically based on information already contained in the order).

In some cases, a list of previous responses appears as soon as you position the cursor in the box. In other cases, the list appears after you begin typing a certain number of characters. You can type a new response or click an appropriate one in the list. When you choose a response from the list, other dependent fields might be automatically populated with the data that was last used when the listed response was used for this test and client. You can use those responses, type new ones, or clear the data.

Tip: When the cursor is in a response field, any available help for that field appears at the bottom of the dialog box.

Notes:

Any pre-population of AOE responses based on data from the order occurs only once. If you change or clear any information that appeared automatically, that information will not be pre-populated again.

Likewise, if you subsequently change any information in the order, the corresponding changes are not made to the AOE responses. For example, if an AOE response was automatically populated with the patient’s address, and you then change the patient’s address in the order, that change is not made in the AOE response. However, you will be notified of the discrepancy when you complete the order. (This notification also occurs if you change the pre‑populated AOE response but not the corresponding data within the order.)

To delete one of the previous responses from a displayed list, click next to that response in the list. If any dependent responses already appear on the AOE tab, they are not deleted.

Your response might be automatically converted to all capital letters, depending on the lab.

For some AOE questions, only specific types of responses are allowed. For example, a particular question might require a date or a number. Some numeric responses might require a whole number (with no decimal point) or one or two decimal places. If you type an unacceptable response, a message appears; click OK, correct your response, and try again.

If you choose a response from a list, the abbreviated form of that response might appear on the requisition, followed by the response you chose in parentheses. For example, the response Abdomen might appear as ABD (Abdomen) on the requisition.

If two or more tests have the same AOE question, you might not have to provide the same answer twice. If an administrator grouped similar AOE questions, all of the affected tests appear in a single bar, and the common AOE question appears once below them.

If a common AOE question is identical for all affiliated tests, then the question is always presented in exactly the same way, no matter which test you ordered first. However, if the question or potential responses are different, the question affiliated with the first ordered test is presented. For example, for order code 3526, a valid response to the AOE question might be any text. For order code 17176, the response to the same question might be restricted to a date. If you added order code 3526 to the order first, then your response to the common question could be any text. If you added the order code 17176 to the order first, then your response would be restricted to a date.
