Managing Physicians and Non-Physician Providers

Each client is typically associated with one or more physicians. Whenever you place an order and specify a physician, that physician is typically added to the client automatically. You can also add physicians manually, and remove physicians who are no longer associated with the client. You can do this via either the Setup menu or the legacy Order Entry page.

Likewise, for labs and clients that support this feature, each client might be associated with one or more non-physician providers (NPPs), such as physician assistants. NPPs are never added to a client automatically, but you can add and remove them manually. You can do this via either the Setup menu or the legacy Order Entry page.

Notes:

During legacy order entry, if Bill Type is set to Client or Patient, you can type the physician’s name in the Physician box. However, that information is used only for that order. Manually typed physician names are not automatically added to the client. (With streamlined order entry, you can type the physician’s name no matter which bill type is used, but as with legacy order entry, it is used only for that order.)

You cannot modify existing physicians—for example, you cannot add or change a National Provider Identifier (NPI) or Unique Physician Identification Number (UPIN). To do that, you must remove and then add the physician again.
