Edit a Filed Order (Online Edits Allowed)

1 Access the requisition log, change the filter criteria if necessary, and then click Search (as described in Filter the Requisition Log).

Note: To edit a filed instance of a standing order, you must choose an option other than Standing Orders in the Order Type list (as described in step 7 in Filter the Requisition Log).

2 Position the pointer over the Actions link for the order that you want to change, and then click Edit.

The Order Entry page displays all of the information associated with the order.

Notes:

If appears next to the Actions link, contact Client Services to request any changes.

For redirected and nationwide orders, be sure to edit the instance of the order associated with the performing lab, not the original lab.

If a Modify link appears instead of an Edit link, see Edit a Filed Order (Online Edits Not Allowed).

If you edit an order that included an alternate order code, that code is automatically replaced with the primary order code.

3 If the order was placed with a lab and facility that use accessioning, a prompt appears, asking if all specimens are in hand. If you still have all of the specimens, click OK and go to the next step.

If any of the specimens have been sent to the lab, click Cancel., review the displayed instructions, and then click OK.

4 If an order entry message is associated with the client, that message appears.

When you have finished reviewing the message, click Close.

Tip: If you need to see this message again later, click in the bar with the buttons.

5 Make any appropriate changes to the order.

You can typically change any aspect of the order except the lab, client, or patient’s SSN or patient ID. For some clients, you cannot change an existing lab reference ID. You also cannot remove the patient or search for a different one. (For information about restrictions that apply to editing accessioned orders, see Accessioned Order Updates.)

For more information about the order entry options, see Placing an Order.

Notes:

If the order is not generic, if it was filed within the past 24 hours, and if it was not previously split, the Split Order button appears. If the order contains more than one order code, you can put one or more tests on hold, thereby removing them from the order sent to the lab. For information about manually splitting an order, see Complete the Order.

If the lab supports adding attachments, you can add new images (up to a total of ten images or the equivalent of 4MBs), but you cannot delete any images that were added when the order was filed. For more information, see Add Attachments.

If one or more order codes are invalid, the affected codes appear in bold red text in the Profiles/Tests area, preceded by . In the adjacent list, click the option that indicates how you handled each code. If none of the listed options is appropriate, click Other, type an appropriate response on the Reconcile dialog box, and click OK.

When an invalid order code is reconciled, appears next to the code. Orders with unreconciled invalid order codes cannot be filed.

6 Click File, and then take any other necessary steps to complete the order. For more information, see Complete the Order.

You can print the updated requisition; labels are printed automatically.

If you click Return on the Requisition page or Close on the Requisition dialog box, the requisition log appears again. If you click Search again, appears next to the requisition number of the order that you changed, the status of the order is Edited, information about the date and initiator of the changes appears in the Modifications area, and information about the original order appears in the Archived Requisitions area.

Notes:

If you edited an accessioned order, and accession information is not retrieved within 30 seconds after you click File, you can proceed with editing the order. However, you will be able to print only a standard requisition, not an accession requisition.

If you added a test to an accessioned order, labels should be printed only if the new test requires an additional specimen. If you remove tests or make other changes that do not affect the ordered tests, an updated requisition is printed, but no extraneous labels should be printed. (Extraneous label printing is suppressed only if the accession system supports this feature.)

Clicking Cancel does not cancel the order. It simply discards any changes that you made to the order.
