Viewing or Requesting Order Routing Rules

In most cases, the tests that you order will be performed by your current lab. However, under some circumstances, it might be appropriate for certain tests to be performed by a different lab.

For labs that support this feature, you can view a list of any existing order routing rules, and request additions, changes, or deletions.

All routing rules are specific to a particular lab and client. If you can access more than one client, and you want certain orders to be routed for all of them, you must request an order routing rule for each client separately.

Although different types of routing can occur during order entry, you can request only test-based routing rules. Test-based rules are triggered by a specific order code, and apply only to that code. (You can create a test-based routing rule for a predefined panel, but not for custom profiles.)

For each order code, you can request multiple rules. The first rule is applied automatically, if possible. For example, if the test is ordered by someone who cannot access the lab specified in the first rule, that rule is not applied.

In legacy order entry; the subsequent rules are available as override options. For example, you could request that when you are accessing the TMP lab, orders for code 123 should be sent to either the MIA lab or SWF lab. If the rule for MIA is listed first, orders for that code will automatically route to MIA, but you will be able to optionally send the test to SWF (or the original lab, TMP) instead. However, in streamlined order entry, after the first rule has been applied, the other rules are not available as override options; you can only route the test back to the original lab.
